Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or chamber, creating an environment with higher than normal atmospheric pressure. This treatment is being explored as a potential intervention for veterans with PTSD. The theory behind its effectiveness lies in the idea that increased oxygen levels may enhance brain function and promote healing. For veterans with PTSD, it is believed that HBOT may have neuroprotective effects, reducing inflammation and supporting the repair of damaged neural tissues associated with trauma. While research on the efficacy of HBOT for PTSD is ongoing, some studies suggest that it may contribute to symptom reduction, including improvements in sleep, mood, and overall well-being.
Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is currently in "trial" stages with the VA, so availability is limited.
